Bronchoscopy

What is Bronchoscopy?

A bronchoscopy is a procedure that uses a thin, flexible instrument with a light on the end to look for problems inside your airways (bronchi) and lungs. Our consultant will spray local anaesthetic on the inside of your nose and the back of your throat, which will numb these areas throughout the procedure. They may offer you a sedative to assist you in relaxing. Bronchoscopies are usually completed in less than fifteen minutes.

The consultant will pass a flexible bronchoscope down the back of your throat and into your lungs through your nose. The bronchoscope will be used to examine your airways. Most bronchoscopes are linked to a monitor, allowing your consultant to see images of your airways more clearly. When your consultant is finished with the examination, the bronchoscope will be gently removed.
